California Kobra Carry

CALIFORNIA KOBRA CARRY

The Kobra Carry is the perfect solution for those who prefer a smaller model 1911, but insist on complete reliability. The slide has been reduced to the minimum possible (4.25") without significantly impairing the legendary reliability of the 5" slide. The frame has been modified with the innovative Ed Brown Bobtail® housing which reduces the projecting butt of the mainspring housing without sacrificing the full size frame and magazine capacity. The Bobtail® minimizes the print under your jacket when carrying and reduces weight. Officer's frames reduce magazine capacity and limit grip, while keeping the projecting, sharp butt. Slides shorter than 4.25" are notorious for reduced reliability. These problems are eliminated with the Ed Brown Commander Bobtail® configuration, which reflects the genius of John Browning with an innovative modern flair. The functional simplicity has yet to be matched. Unique with the Kobra series pistols is the innovative snakeskin treatment. It is a directional pattern, meaning it is smooth to slide your hand up, but bites in for a snug grip the other way where you need it. It's easier on the hands than checkering, and our female customers in particular can't stop bragging about it. Not to mention it just looks cool! The Kobra Carry is an innovative masterpiece, and a serious tool for those who want something a little different. We are sure you'll be charmed by the Kobra Carry!

Kobra Carry Lightweight

KOBRA CARRY LIGHTWEIGHT

The Kobra Carry is now available in an aluminum frame version. Aluminum has one major advantage, and a few disadvantages. The major advantage is the lighter weight, being half a pound lighter than the steel version. This weight advantage cannot be over-valued for those who carry frequently.

Our aluminum frame is made from 7075, the strongest aluminum alloy available and the same material used in M-16/AR-15 assault rifle receivers. The tensile strength is more than adequate for the durability requirements. However, no aluminum is as abrasive resistant as steel because it is slightly softer on the surface. This means service life will be somewhat reduced, and the frame is easier to damage.

A steel version might be expected to last many thousands of rounds of shooting. An aluminum frame will also last thousands of rounds, but certainly not as many as steel. As always, the life will depend on many factors such as load strength, maintenance, lubrication, etc. A carry gun is generally expected to be shot enough to assure familiarization with the weapon and then is carried most of it's life. Occasional practice is fine, but if you plan on a high volume of shooting, you would be much better served with a steel frame gun. If you mainly plan on carrying the gun and shooting it occasionally, you will find the aluminum is a blessing on your hip. Just keep in mind that the cosmetic finish can be damaged much easier than a steel gun. Shooting with a ring on could cosmetically damage the finish. Getting even mildly aggressive with a mag change will cosmetically damage the inside of the mag well. One just needs to be more careful with aluminum. This is the trade-off for lighter weight.

Normally, the feedramp might be damaged just by hollowpoint rounds impacting it repeatedly, but not with an Ed Brown. We have solved this particular problem by designing a steel insert for the feedramp. Now hollow point or solid nose ammo hits the steel insert and never touches the aluminum frame.

The bottom line: if you intend to carry the gun a lot, and not use it for your "daily shooter", the aluminum version is for you. Otherwise, stick with the steel version.

Classic Custom Enhanced

CLASSIC CUSTOM ENHANCED

The Enhanced Edition begins with our proven Classic Custom platform and elevates it through meticulous handwork and refined detail. Featuring hand-relief engraving by our master engraver, this pistol blends timeless design with carefully chosen enhancements that transform it into something truly special.

Its signature slide treatment is both striking and deliberate. The slide flats are painstakingly brought to a brilliant hand-polished finish, contrasting beautifully against the glass-bead-finished frame. Adding to its elegance, the master engraver applies tasteful hand-relief engraving to the slide flats, giving the pistol a depth and character that can only be achieved by hand.

Attention to function is evident throughout. The top of the slide is flattened and finely grooved to create a glare-reducing sighting plane that naturally leads the eye to the front sight. At the rear, 50 LPI serrations perfectly complement the deep-buried adjustable rear sight while eliminating unwanted light reflection.

The frame is finished with precise 25 LPI checkering, providing a secure, refined grip that matches the pistol’s visual balance.

The Enhanced Edition stands as a showcase of uncompromising craftsmanship—where performance, beauty, and tradition meet.

Ed Brown rifle
A5 Tactical

We at Ed Brown Products are deeply saddened to report that Ed Brown, industry icon and founder of Ed Brown Products, has passed away.

Ed passed away at his home on September 15, 2024, after an intense battle with an aggressive, un-treatable liver cancer.

Ed was born on December 13, 1946, and is survived by his wife, who he married Nov 27, 1965. Next year would have been their 60th wedding anniversary. Ed is also survived by his three children, and six grand-children.

Ed Brown received his FFL and began business as a part-time gunsmith in 1968 under the name "Brown's Gun Shop". For 20 years on evenings and weekends, he honed his skill, experience, and reputation as one of the world's finest pistol-smiths, while during the day he worked as a tool and die maker, CNC programmer, and CAD/CAM designer. Ed began shooting IPSC and Bianchi Cup in 1980, and was ranked in the Top 16 of the World as a championship combat shooter.

Ed Brown

Ed Brown Products, Inc. incorporated June of 1992 to manufacture a complete line of 1911 components and accessories. Custom pistol work was no longer being accepted.

In 1998, after manufacturing all the major components of the 1911, Ed's two sons Travis and Wade joined the business full time. A new direction was established - the design and manufacture of a complete line of Ed Brown firearms. The next few years were invested in plant expansion and R&D for the design and manufacture of the Ed Brown 1911 frame and slide.

In the year 2000, the Kobra Carry was introduced. It was the first 1911 to be available in all stainless, with the snakeskin metal pattern, and was equipped with the Ed Brown Bobtail, designed and trademarked by Ed Brown earlier that year, and the Ed Brown Bobtail was soon copied in some form by nearly every 1911 manufacturer in existence.

In 2001, the Brown family began to selectively establish an authorized dealer network across the country for Ed Brown firearms. Within a few short years, Ed Brown firearms were present in high-end retail establishments across the US, and in many foreign countries. With his sons taking care of the business, Ed pursued another path - the innovation and design of a new bolt action for hunting and sniper rifles, the M-702, and later, the M-704 controlled feed, which were the foundation of the newly created line of Ed Brown rifles.

The presidential elections of 2008 and 2012, combined with the 100 year anniversary of the 1911, created an unprecedented demand for our 1911 product line, and years of explosive growth followed. Ed Brown retired from the business in 2010 at age 65, leaving the business operations in the hands of his two capable sons. The rifle company was later sold as capacity was too limited to do both pistols and rifles and maintain the highest quality level the Brown family demanded.

Since Ed’s retirement in 2010 the company has continued to thrive and innovate. Some examples include the popular EVO series pistols, which optimizes the 1911 platform for the popular 9mm caliber, the entire line of Ed Brown Performance 1911 magazines, and the Fueled series pistols which currently include the Springfield Prodigy, Springfield Prodigy Comp, S&W M&P 2.0, and the world’s largest selection of aftermarket S&W M&P parts. Next year in 2025 we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Ed Brown Kobra Carry as the most popular, longest running, high-end custom 1911 handgun of all time.

As you might have imagined, over his lifetime Ed Brown had collected many fine firearms, and one-of-a-kind pieces, not only Ed Brown Custom rifles, and Ed Brown 1911's, but many other makers. The Brown family will be selectively offering several of these firearms, along with ammunition, reloading equipment and components, knives, and other items from Ed’s personal collection over the coming months. Each item will include a letter certifying it as an authentic piece from Ed Brown’s personal collection, and will be signed by a Brown family member. If you are interested in this rare opportunity to own something from Ed’s personal collection, please sign up using the form above to be notified when new items are presented.

The Brown family and all of our employees would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Ed Brown, as the founder of Ed Brown Products, a phenomenal, family-owned and operated, American firearms company, which continues the now 56+ year incredible legacy of high quality products and innovation in the industry. We will miss you!

Is the KC9 California approved?

The most common question we received about the new EVO series KC9 was, “is it CA approved?”. The simple answer is no, it is not, and will not appear on the CA roster.

However, the KC9 upper is available as a “retro” option. This means you can have the KC9 upper installed on your CA Ed Brown Kobra Carry, which will transform your gun into a KC9. You can even swap back to your 45 ACP upper easily, effectively having a dual caliber pistol.

The only requirement is that you own a CA approved Ed Brown Kobra Carry, and you are willing to send it back to us under our Basic Service Package, to get the EVO KC9 upper installed. The firearm can then be shipped directly back to your home.
